Summer 2023

“In summer, the song sings itself.”
— William Carlos Williams
I wonder how many newsletters start with "The days are longer...?" It makes sense though! It's such an important part of this time of year, especially for my community members who live up here in Vermont. The days are exceptionally short in winter, shorter than our friends down south, and so we are grateful and often profoundly in need of the extra light in late spring and summer.
What are we doing with that light? Are we being intentional about taking long walks, bike rides at dusk, and slow paddles? Are we lovingly gathering our cherished ones around a campfire or by the water's edge to tell old stories and create new ones? Are we pausing to close our eyes and let the evening call of a loon reverberate through our souls and wake up the spirit within us?
If you are, that's wonderful. I am still working on arriving fully in this moment myself! If you're not, you have time. If you can avoid it, try not to judge yourself for not having the perfect summer or the perfect Sunday... or the perfect anything! Most of us still have the same jobs, at which we may experience the same issues; we might have new things come up with our health or our families, life goes on even when the days are long, and for some people, that can make it feel even worse. Be gentle with yourself if you are in this latter category. Be thoughtful with others if you're in the former! Finally - if you can - just be present. Notice what's working for you and what isn't. You can always make adjustments.
What I know how to do for myself and how I like to help others...
Sometimes it's embodied awareness, deeply felt presence, guided self-exploration, and dialogue with a trusted therapist that helps us to unlock and motivate movement where we might be stuck; and we can get stuck even on the brightest of days.
When we are fully embracing the season and its gifts, we can still gently stir our internal environment, notice what arises, discover new ways to engage with our joy and love, and live our truth more fully and boldly!
I know I know... many of you are getting outdoors! You're hiking and biking and swimming, you're tending your garden and taking your dogs to the park. Are you pausing? Are you connecting mindfully with the more-than-human world? Do you think your more-than-human kin are feeling truly seen by you? Are you unlocking your heart's center and tethering it to the soul-supporting natural community to which you belong? If you're racing through the trees and zipping down the trail, laughing all the way, that's amazing - and - you may not be receiving all the benefits of this spectacular time of year and experiencing the fullness and richness of a reciprocal relationship with your primal self and your natural environment. Rewilding offers a few different ways into this vital, vibrant state of being.
