Change in the Air

August 2025

"Change happens very slow and very sudden."
-Dorothy Bryant

When I look out my window, there's a tinge of gold on everything. Hints that autumn is on her way. A signal and a celebration.

The signal is to embrace this moment, for change is coming. If you haven't slowed down in a while to breathe, take a walk, have a long conversation with an old friend, sit with your toes in the water, this is your invitation!

The celebration is the harvest beginning, we're entering a time of abundance meant to be enjoyed, and we are beginning the transition to the slow, quiet time of year.

I don't know about you, but my summer was anything but slow and quiet, and my body is ready for it!

Summer can be joyful, but it can also be harried and frenetic. As a youngster, I remember long days with time to spare, to daydream, to get bored and wonder what my friends were doing. Days that would start with a walk around the pond, chatting with some ducks, carefully avoiding swans, exploring my neighborhood, calling on a friend, and riding my bike to the park. The 16 hours I was allowed to roam felt like two weeks.

Everywhere I looked this summer, it seemed like everyone was trying to do three things at once. Summers in Vermont are precious, and so I, and lots of people I know, try to cram every ounce of fun and connection we can into just a few short weeks. Weeks that felt like minutes!

I'm someone who perks up with the crispness of fall; it's electric. Even though I don't go to school or have kiddos to pick out supplies for, I get that new beginning feeling every year. It often comes with new ideas, new lists, new things I'd like to learn and do, and new commitments. Like a cool hand on my back, gently encouraging me forward, autumn is energizing.

I just said that I'm tired from a summer packed with activities and little time to slow down and savor its sweetness. So, I'm sharing with you all - as my collective accountability partner - that my work this autumn will be to be judicious with my time, slow and careful when receiving invitations, and to continually check in with my body to learn if what I really need aligns with what I think I want.

If you find yourself struggling with the same thing, send me a note!

If you find that what you really need is support, I encourage you not to let the urgency of your busy life inhibit you from spending just an hour once a week or so, taking care of yourself.

I wish for all of us a season of softness, lightness, connection, ease, and time to be. When we align our body and mind, and listen to our deep knowing, we remember our freedom, for each of those can be a choice.

If you're new to me or we haven't worked together and you'd like to learn more about my yoga-informed approach to therapy, let's talk.
